Sports

GAA:
Senior girls take part in the Primary Gaelic Football League. The team reached the Shield Semi- Final in 2018. Well done, girls. Training in autumn is fun and keeps all the girls on their toes. We are lucky to have Briain Ryan coach some sessions with 3rd and 4th classes in Ballycomey in
camogie and football skills. All classes had spring and summer camogie/ hurling skills training in school, too

Swimming:
In Term 2, 2nd – 6th class pupils attend swimming lessons in the Watershed, Kilkenny. This is a very worthwhile opportunity to gain confidence in the pool and is enjoyed by all.

Active Schools Week:
This is held every June and incorporates cycling, dance, games, athletics, skipping and culminates in Sports Day at Ballycomey. Also, senior girls organise Move on Monday or Fun Friday, several times during the year, to encourage pupils to play games and be active at lunchtime.

Active Flag: For the school year 2022/ 23, our school is working towards achieving our First Active Flag!

The School Run:
For the past few years, our school has held a fundraiser in the Discovery Park, called The School Run. The fantastic Run Committee organise a 10K and 5K run, with a 2 K family walk/ run, magnificent refreshments, face painting and great entertainment. Follow @TheSchoolRun_ie for more information.

Cycling:
We learn about cycling safety and have cycling lessons in senior classes. Girls learn the rules of the road and have lots of fun navigating the special course set out for them. We are lucky to have had special cycling safety instructors to deliver lessons and also provide bicycles!

Zumba:
Rebecca has been our Zumba teacher for the past two years, bringing high-energy dance workouts weekly to all classes.

Sports day:
This is held each June in Ballycomey. This is a great day for all involved, with the Parents’ Council providing huge support. Athletics, co-operative games, novelty races and ball games are all enjoyed. The bouncy castle and treats at the end of the day, round off a sporting, fun day.

Facilities:
The gym has the equipment to facilitate the teaching across the strands of the P.E. Curriculum. We have ample suitable resources for all classes, and these can be used outdoors also. Outside, have two basketball courts, a volleyball net, and hop-scotch games.

Playground:
The L – shaped playground allows for active break times. When the weather permits, pupils play skipping and use other gym equipment. Everyone comes back into schoolwork refreshed!
